1. Quiet on a Summer Day:
It's Essential for Your Sanity and Their Brain
by MaryJo Wagner, Ph.D.
Is your youngster only quiet when asleep or
watching TV?
Kids need quiet activities that require focus and
concentration. The trick is getting them to do it.
And you need the down-time too. Schedule some time every
day
which doesn't involve driving kids to the pool, and
you'll stop
counting the days till they're back in school.
Succeeding in school requires the ability to be quiet
and focus.
Your kids will benefit by practicing these skills during
the
summer that they'll need in the fall when school starts.
The key is letting them choose fun un-school-like quiet
things.

fun, quiet things to do, go to

2. Just for Grownups
Last time I promised a technique that helps kids calm
down
instantly. I’m putting it in “Just for Grown Ups’
because I use
it myself every single day! This is from Brain Gym and
it’s
called “Hook Ups.” Give it a try. Then show it to your
kids.
While sitting, cross your right ankle over your left.
Now arms
straight out in front, cross your right wrist over your
left and
turn your arms so your palms are together. Intertwine
your
fingers. Now bring your hands under your arms and up to
your
chin. Sit quietly and breathe deeply for 2-3 minutes.
That’s it.
You’re lowering stress in the central nervous system and
connecting electrical circuits in your body. You’ll feel
calmer
and more focused.

3. Brain Quiz
Last issue's Question: True or False? Being bored damages
children's brains.
Answer: Yes. The brain likes activity, both mental and physical.
So get those kids moving. Get them thinking. Get them reading.
Get them doing puzzles and word games.
Question: What kind of exercise is best for kids' brains?
a) Shooting baskets
b) Riding a bike
c) Jumping rope
d) Playing with a hula hoop
You'll get the answer in three weeks in the next e-zine.
First person to e-mail me at mailto:mjw@mjwagner.com with the
correct answer and why it's so wins a complimentary 3-session

7. Resource You Can Use
Looking for a brain book for kids in grades 3-6? "You Can't Use
Your Brain If You're a Jellyfish" by Fred Ehrlich is a great
start. You can read a review of it by Eric Chudler
(see "Great Web Site" below) at
http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/news106.html It's item
number 5.
==============================================
6. Great Web Site
Check out Dr. Eric Chudler's "Neuroscience for Kids." He's been
publishing a newsletter for ten years and has archived dozens of
fascinating articles about the brain, including animals' brains.
Although aimed at middle-school kids, it's got plenty for parents
and teachers. You'll find contests and experiments too. It's at
http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/neurok.html
If you live in Washington state, you can watch Chudler's show
"Brainworks" on TV. The rest of us can get it on streaming video
at http://www.uwtv.org/programs/displayevent.asp?rid=3589
